Jay,

The Romans used pace (passus) to denote two foot falls. A thousand
paces (mille passuum) was thus about 5000/6000 feet. This is the
source of the English word 'mile.'

However, most of us, I think, have been defining Pace as one foot
fall - the same as Step, in our clues.
